Vancouver Island Children's Assessment Network (VICAN)
Condition Specific Support, Mental Health - Child & Youth, Services for Children, and Services for Youth
Provided by Island Health
- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) in at-risk children showing significant behavioural and developmental difficulties, who have already used some local services.
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for all children up to age six, and for children over six when such services are not provided by the local school district. The VICAN clinical team partners with and operates under the same provincial diagnostic standards as the British Columbia Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN). BCAAN is a network of clinicians who assess and diagnose children and youth who may have ASD. All the clinicians that are part of BCAAN use the same guidelines and standards to decide whether a child or youth has ASD.
- A referral is required from a primary healthcare provider or other medical specialist (providers please see below)
- Any child, youth, and adolescent living on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands who have complex developmental needs is eligible
- Note: those who reside in the Greater Victoria to Duncan areas are generally assessed at the Queen Alexandra Centre in Victoria. Those residing in Nanaimo will receive assessments at the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, with outreach staff traveling to the Comox Valley and Port Hardy areas when needed
